The Modern Age Of Reputation Management

It used to be that reputation management was as simple as speaking with customers, shaking hands and maybe getting a few nice pieces published in the local newspaper. But in the Internet age, online reputation management is a much more complex beast. Internet users can quickly tarnish the reputation of a corporate business or its prominent employees by writing blogs and negative reviews that can rapidly gain a large audience. Since you never get a second chance to make a first impression, it’s important to make sure the first things people read about you and your business on the Web are positive. There are two types of corporate reputation management campaigns: proactive and reactive. Proactive campaigns are all about building a positive reputation in the search engines and other online mediums so negative content never has a chance to become prominent in the first place. This ensures that the first impression of your business is positive. Reactive campaigns are all about reacting to negative content that has already gotten a foothold in the search engines. The goal is to fill the Internet with positive content about your business until you are able to push the negative stuff so far down that people are not likely to read it. Online reputation management campaigns can vary in length, especially when they are reactive, because there is no quick solution to instantly remove negative content that is already present on the Web. A reputation management campaign can take anywhere from one to six months depending on whether it is reactive or proactive and a variety of other factors. In an age where your online image is often all you’ve got, though, it is important to get this right and it should not be rushed. Corporate reputation management is more important than ever for any business that has a presence on the Web.
